    Irish Ladis Dress
    Books - long, very long

I checked the archives, but didn't find any info on this one. Can anyone tell
me if Janet Arnold has done a Patterns of Fashion book for the 13th, 14th, or
15th centuries? I checked the one I have (Elizabethan), but there was no
information on other titles by Janet Arnold. The only store that carries any
costume reference at all only has one of her books about the 18th century.
It's probably too much to hope for, but if anyone has a list of all (or most)
of Janet Arnold's books, I would really appreciate a copy.

Thanks for your help!

Subject: Irish Ladis Dress

> I am working a booth at the Southern CA Ren Faire this year in which
>it would be more appropriate for me to wear the outfit I only know as the
>Irish ladies gown. I have done the English side of things and am familiar
>with that, but I don't have the Irish gown info. Here are my questions:

My favorite book on the topic is _Dress in Ireland_ by Dunlevy (sp?)
Maybe some of the historians on the list can tell us how historically
accurate this book is. According to the author, Irish women in the
Renaissance had a couple of different fashions than the English.

First of all, saffron yellow was considered a typically Irish color & was
outlawed in Ireland for a while because England was trying to suppress
Irish patriotism. So a bright yellow underskirt may or may not be alright
depending on the status & political views of your character.

>2. Gown (Kertle???(sp?))
> - Is the neck scooped or squared?

According to _Dress in Ireland_ many Irish women wore v-necked dresses.

>How much fabric is in the sleaves?

I don't know about the chemise sleeve, but the dress sleeve is only a partial
sleeve. It is connected at the shoulder & runs in a strip down the outside
of the arm & is tied by laces around the wrist.

Also, Dunlevy shows pictures of Irish women wearing an unusual hat that I
really can't begin to describe.

I am also interested in creating an Irish dress this year for the Kansas
City Ren Fest & I was wondering about the historical accuracy of the above
information. This kind of dress would definitely set me a little apart
from the regular English costumes.
