Eric Praetzel - 1991 Algonquin Park, Ontario

This is from a 1991 Algonquin park trip. I hiked the 64km loop of the Western Uplands trail in 2 nights and 3 days. Each day was about 21 km and pretty painfull since I packed in enough water for the whole trip!

Aug 2, 1991
Left home 3:40am, arrived Algonquin trail head 7am, 250km drive
Hiked from 7:45am to 4pm, 1 hour lunch , aprox 30 min breaks in last 10km

71k backpacking trail
pack 50lb
3 peaches, 7 apples, 3 cucumbers + water jug
my weight 151 lb
did 5km/h for 3h, after 6 hours did ~23km
hips bruised, shoulders feel horrible, ankles, calves, guads and thighs
near spams
only swatting bugs now and then
lakes I'm passing all seem murky, one group said they drank it straight
storm clouds rolling in, thunder
~8pm, more mosquitoes, legs will be pretty sore, lake water tastes a
bit funny, wish I had a good book to read
during the hiking I felt cool, but was sweating
I'm wearing running shoes - my feet are not blistered, but well pounded
with toes sore from hitting the front of the shoe on steep descents

Aug 3 I made it to Ramona Lake (~23km) at 4:30pm
I was up at 5:30am and there was plenty of light
started hiking 7:00am, took 30 min. lunch due to bugs, the bugs are
worse now, but not horrible
my feet are aching a lot, pace about 3km/h now, right knee in pain and
right toe likely blistered
my raisin bread is hard to eat without lots of water - it's rock hard
leg muscle pain was overshadowed by knee pain towards the end
7:30pm air is cool and damp, getting darker, it's too buggy to go out of
the tent
7:50pm rain

Sun 4th
8.4km in 2 hours
pain in hips, shoulders, both feet blistered, persistent knee pain in both
the last 4km was a big flat highway with lots of signs

Friday
4 hour, 350km drive to Algonquin
arrived 6pm, nice fall leaf colour
we hiked into the dark and then with lights, drizzling started
5C, pitched tents on a flat part of the path aprox 1/2km from first camp
my light died, pretty well everyone ate a cold supper, rain started

Sat
rain stopped, cold, clammy, everyone is sleeping in, my feet are cold
Long hike, ~20km, sunny, no rain, nice day, we decided to do the short
loop considering our pace
Supper - Dave got his stove working, played harmonica and we sang TV
theme songs around the fire
We squeezed 5 tents into a site that looked like it would not hold 2
camp setup at 5pm
The night was cold, very close to freezing, my feet are freezing,
headache, sliding down the tent due to slope

Sun
Daves stove stopped working, 0C, windy, cold

Here is the start of the trail. It is big, wide, flat and easy going. The further you go the narrower the trail gets!

This was the half way point for the entire loop.

Fire Tower in the town of Dorset

If you are going upto Algonquin via Dorset you can see the firetower from the road. It is open during daylight hours and you can go to the tower and get a view of the surrounding area.
