This is from a 1991 Algonquin park trip. I hiked the 64km loop of the Western Uplands trail in 2 nights and 3 days. Each day was about 21 km and pretty painfull since I packed in enough water for the whole trip!
Aug 2, 1991 Left home 3:40am, arrived Algonquin trail head 7am, 250km drive Hiked from 7:45am to 4pm, 1 hour lunch , aprox 30 min breaks in last 10km 71k backpacking trail pack 50lb 3 peaches, 7 apples, 3 cucumbers + water jug my weight 151 lb did 5km/h for 3h, after 6 hours did ~23km hips bruised, shoulders feel horrible, ankles, calves, guads and thighs near spams only swatting bugs now and then lakes I'm passing all seem murky, one group said they drank it straight storm clouds rolling in, thunder ~8pm, more mosquitoes, legs will be pretty sore, lake water tastes a bit funny, wish I had a good book to read during the hiking I felt cool, but was sweating I'm wearing running shoes - my feet are not blistered, but well pounded with toes sore from hitting the front of the shoe on steep descents Aug 3 I made it to Ramona Lake (~23km) at 4:30pm I was up at 5:30am and there was plenty of light started hiking 7:00am, took 30 min. lunch due to bugs, the bugs are worse now, but not horrible my feet are aching a lot, pace about 3km/h now, right knee in pain and right toe likely blistered my raisin bread is hard to eat without lots of water - it's rock hard leg muscle pain was overshadowed by knee pain towards the end 7:30pm air is cool and damp, getting darker, it's too buggy to go out of the tent 7:50pm rain Sun 4th 8.4km in 2 hours pain in hips, shoulders, both feet blistered, persistent knee pain in both the last 4km was a big flat highway with lots of signs Friday 4 hour, 350km drive to Algonquin arrived 6pm, nice fall leaf colour we hiked into the dark and then with lights, drizzling started 5C, pitched tents on a flat part of the path aprox 1/2km from first camp my light died, pretty well everyone ate a cold supper, rain started Sat rain stopped, cold, clammy, everyone is sleeping in, my feet are cold Long hike, ~20km, sunny, no rain, nice day, we decided to do the short loop considering our pace Supper - Dave got his stove working, played harmonica and we sang TV theme songs around the fire We squeezed 5 tents into a site that looked like it would not hold 2 camp setup at 5pm The night was cold, very close to freezing, my feet are freezing, headache, sliding down the tent due to slope Sun Daves stove stopped working, 0C, windy, cold
Here is the start of the trail. It is big, wide, flat and easy going. The further you go
the narrower the trail gets!
