Eric Praetzel - Terra Nova National Park, Newfoundland

These pictures are from an August 2000 trip taken with 100 or 200ASA negative film.

This is more of a family park and it doesn't offer much in the way of hiking. All but one trail is short and even the long trail could be done in 1 day.

Activities:

Malady Head Trail

This was a short and fast hike with no really spectacular views. They rated it at 5 km, 2 hours; but it only takes about 1 hour.

Two Day "Outport" Trail

This is a 2 day trail [about 6 hours / day of hiking] although the trail could be done in a single day if someone was fit and had a very early start! Be prepared to spend the entire 2nd day with wet boots and pants as you will be hiking thru a swamp for hours. We were told that in 2001 or perhaps later; they would re-route this part of the trail to more hikeable terrain.

The main stops along this trail were:

Mt. Stamford - 5 good view points, 2.5 hours into hike
Minchins Cove [boat launch, 6 sites]
South Broad Cove
Lions Den
The return leg was all deer flies, horse flies and other biting insects. We never saw the Half Way rangers cabin or the campground. The swamp was a 4 hour forced march to escape the bugs.
The worst part of the swamp was the 7km leg from Ochre Hill to the Broadcove campground. It had some boardwalk but parts of it were very deep swampy sections where you sank to your knees in the muck.

Lions Den South

There were tons of jellyfish in this bay and on the rocks!
It had been a hot day and so I carefully washed with saltwater.

This is the only picture taken on the 2nd day.
The trail up Coline Park harbour Hill was impossible to follow to the top. After bush wacking we realized that could easily get lost [the trails in this area are rarely hiked and not obvious.
This picture was from bog-hell. We were going to eat breakfast at the cabin and before getting there we found out selves swarmed by deer flies, horse flies and other manner of biting insects. We never saw the cabin or the campsite; and the day started with a 4 hour forced march thru bog and swamp with bugs galore.
Upon reaching Ochre Hill we figured that all was well with only 7km to go. However, many times the remaining trail went into even worse bogs where you sank to your knees in muck.
