Peterborough Pictures

These pictures were taken at the Peterborough lift-lock in early October 2001.
You can see that there are 2 "lifts". ie 2 big chambers to carry boats and water up and down. The lifts are moved with hydrolic pistons [right under them]. The whole system does not require any electricity.

The locks lift 19.8m (65') in about 90 seconds, compared to 3.5m (12') in about 12 min. for typical locks which have to pump/release water. These locks were the highest lift locks and the largest unreinforced concrete structure when they were built.

Here is the lift lock as seen from the road.

Walking down the canal you will see an old, but working, swing bridge for the train.
