Ben Lomond - Scotland
Ben Lomond
This was not quite an enjoyable day. Like several others it just rained all day. The clouds covered the peak and
we were unable to see anything. The winds were quite high during our ascent however, at lower elevations, the
winds did get much worse later on in the day. We were both thoroughly soaked, from the waist down,
well before we made it to the peak.
The climb took 3:15. Once you have crossed the 2nd gate it is only another 1 hour to the top.
Loch Lochy hike
1.5 mi, easy, starts by the Scottish Youth Hostel
Bus on a "normal" road
Yes the roads in Scotland are narrower than North Americans are used to!
Loch Lomond [eastern side] / Great Highland Way ?
From the Scotish Youth Hostel we walked north along Loch Lomond to the Rob Roy cave. In these pictures you can
see the Cobbler. The trail is fairly flat and starts out wide, on a road, although it does narrow. By the time
the trail gets to Glen Coe it does become quite hilly; even though the trail does keep to the glen (valley). There
are side trails which take you up to peaks such as Ben Lomond.
The cave itself takes a bit of work to find. When you've crossed the very rocky bit that seems to be the cave;
take a side trail to the Loch and then scramble over the rock around the shore to find the cave.

Fungus
There was a really neat fungus (?) growing on and near the path. It looked like melted wax.
Loch Lomond area
This picture of Ben Lomond was taken from the higest window in the Loch Lomond YH castle. The camera was shooting thru
2 layers of glass with a polarizer.
