Ben Nevis - Scotland

Ben Nevis

The path up Ben Nevis is quite well prepared and unlike any other hike which we did in Scotland.
The climb up Ben Nevis is a 2 stage hike. The first part takes you up to a broad area from which you will begin the final ascent. At the very top it gets quite rocky.

At the top of Ben Nevis

Yes, the clouds were shrouding the peak and little could be seen except for small glimpses now and then. The cloud did lift a bit about 3 hours later.

After waiting an hour for the cloud to lift we gave up and we considered doing the ridge walk off of Ben Nevis (1334m) to Carn Mor Dearg (1220m), Carn Dearg Meadhonach (1179m). We did not continue the last little bit to Carn Beag Dearg (1010m).
The hard part of this ridge walk was having the cloud lift enough so that we could find the point where we should descend from the peak. The walk was all large rock and slow going. The ridge was quite wide at parts and narrow; but not exceptionally so at other parts. Perhaps the worst was the slow descent from the saddle between Carn Beag Dearg and Carn Darg Meadhonach to the trail wrapping around Ben Nevis. The trail is clearly visible as going to the Mountain Rescue Post in the gully.

Lastly, a funky shot on the last bit of downhill. This was a very long day for us; over 8 hours and we didn't being enough water and food. That was partly due to waiting 1 hour for the fog to clear and taking the slower ridge on the backside as the return route.
