Mike Jones has been calling contra dances since 1998. He was born and grew up in Toronto and now lives in Mississauga. He has called for dance groups in southern Ontario and northern New York. He has been dancing regularly since 1996 when a friend introduced him to the Toronto Country Dancers.
Mike is an avid outdoors person and when, one spring, a strained muscle made whitewater canoeing painful, a friend introduced him to contra dancing. Mike found that the movements involved in dancing were not painful and immediately took to it and began dancing regularly. He took up calling not long after that. He has always enjoyed different types of music and has often wanted to do something musical.
Mike enjoys other dancing as well such as cajun, square, English country and waltz.
He has attended dance camps in 2001 and 2003 and in 2006 was awarded a scholarship to attend a contra callers course at Pinewoods dance camp in Massachusetts.
He has a clear voice and good command of language. Dancers feel safe and well cared for with his calling. Mike enjoys calling a variety of dance figures and looks for good flow in the dances that he calls. He can make complex figures seem deceptively easy to dance.
Mike believes that contra dancing is one of the best expressions available of North American cultural activity. Everyone participates; the dancers dance, the band plays music and the caller calls the dances. Everyone is active in this form of traditional dance. Contra dances are fun, interactive and social activities. Mike helps to make people of all ages and experience levels feel welcome.
Mike enjoys selecting dances with a variety of dance figures to provide enjoyable evenings. He provides clear walk throughs to enable dancers of all experience levels to participate and enjoy themselves.
