I believe Amazon drygoods may carry a regency area bonnet, but if they
don't, they are almost certain to have a pattern if one exists. The address
is 2218 E 11th St Davenport IA 52803, phone is 319 322-6800.
Also, speaking of mail order companies, please could someone tell me how to
contact the Peterman company people keep raving about?
Thanks

I have purchased wigs from Lacey's in NYC. The catalog is rather nice,
and you get what you pay for. I have found some of the wigs are rather
cheap in construction, and all are hard front wigs. Some period pieces,
ie. the 20's are not bad, very good for No No Nanette or Anything Goes.
The beards are not of good quality, the false eyelashes are superior. Get
the catalog and find out. Good luck!

I've got quite a few thing from Lacey & agree with Kitty's
comments on the quality. Sometimes I combine several cheap wigs
(or pieces of them) to get a period hairstyle if Lacey doesn't
have one that works "as is".

Many people seem to be interested in Amazon's batiste (as I am myself).
Has anyone else checked out LACIS's batiste - Finella? It's lovely, and
I've been hemming and hawing about buying some for an Empire dress but
at $20 U.S. it's a bit pricey - lovely but pricey. Is the Amazon batiste
similar in quality but more moderate in price? (By the way, that's $20 per
yard.)

Not very likely. When you see garters in paintings of the same era they
are narrow bands just below the knee and above the swell of the calf --
right where you'd expect them to do some good. The designs I'm talking
about above are a wide (perhaps 6-8 inches) band of pattern in the middle
of the thigh. The impression given is clearly that it is a decoration of
the hose fabric itself.

There is some evidence that garters were worn both below the knee
(ala The OPrder Of the Garter) and above the knee as well. I know
Gentleman that wear hand-made woolen hose and that not only employ points
and below the knee garters but upper garters as well to help them retain
the smooth fit.
I also wonder about the ability of a legiable moto done in
embroidary on a bias cut wool hose? Could this be another piece of
artistic lisences.
