My 1998 vacation was four years after my first Canadian west coast cycling trip
and I was shocked at the changes.
The parks had even more people in them and trail dammage was evident everywhere.
My two most favorite cycling roads are now so clogged with RVs and cars that I would
suggest that people avoid them and go bike somewhere else.
My favorite road was
Duffy Lake Road that goes from Lillooet to Pemberton. This was a quiet road
with 100 km of nothing but wildlife in 1994. It was recently paved then and there
was no traffic to speak of. In 1998 this road was heavily trafficed by RVs
and "civilization" was encroaching in the sense that there was a boat launch
on Duffy Lake (and lots of use) and tons and tons of roadside barriers to
keep the cars on the road.
My other favorite road was the paved logging road out to Long Beach. This
road is now so heavily used by cars and RVs that there frequently are traffic
jams. Doing this as a bike ride would be dangerous and nerve wrecking. I'd
suggest going to Port Alberni and taking a boat (such as the Lady Rose) out
to Ucluelet.
Hiking near Vancouver (Garibaldi provincial Park)
This park was busy in 1994 and is even worse now. The trails tend to be
short, steep and dangerous for inexperienced hikers. Most of them are far
up logging roads and not easily accessable to cyclists. Rental car contracts
stipulate that you are not allowed to drive on gravel roads. Given the rough
shape of some of these roads; I would not want to take my own car on them!
There are some excellent hikes around Whistler/Vancouver; but be prepared for
plenty of gravel roads and lots of people. Don't expect to get campsites
in camping season if you are arriving in the mid/late afternoon. Heck, don't
even expect to get a parking spot unless you arrive before lunch!
